William Blake (1757 - 1827)
William Blake excelled as painter, engraver and poet. Blake was an extremely eccentric person. From the age of seven he habitually saw a white bearded God peering in through his window, or angels perching in trees! He walked the streets wearing the strangest hats and clothes, and his work suggests a new version of Christianity. His art was certainly a precursor of the Pre-Raphaelites and Symbolists.
