Richmal Crompton 1890 - 1969

British writer of children's books. Her first of many William books, Just William, appeared in 1922

Here's an example of the unusual English you'll find in the wonderful 'WILLIAM' books by Richmal Crompton:

'Ullo, I'm William Brown. 'Xpect you've heard of me an' my dog Jumble 'cause we're jolly famous on account of all the adventures what me an' my frien's the Outlaws have.
Me an' the Outlaws try an' avoid our fam'lies cause they don' unnerstan' us. 'Specially my big brother Robert an' my rotten sister Ethel. She's awful. An' my paren's are really heartless. Y'know, my father stops my pocket-money for no reason at all, an' my mother never lets me keep any pet rats or anythin'.
It's jolly hard bein' a Outlaw and havin' adventures when no one unnerstan's you, I can tell you.
You can read all about me, if you like, in this 'xcitin' an' speshul new collexion of all my fav'rite stories. I hope you have a jolly gud time readin' 'em.

Yours truly,

William Brown
