The BRITISH ISLES, GREAT BRITAIN, UNITED KINGDOM

The BRITISH ISLES is the name for the two large islands and several smaller ones lying off the north-west coast of Europe. It is the name for England, Scotland, Wales, both parts of Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands (Jersey and Guernsey), and numerous smaller islands.

Britain - or GREAT BRITAIN (GB) - is the name for England, Wales and Scotland. Britain is the eighth largest island in the world.

The UNITED KINGDOM is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Island. It is about 250,000 square kilometres in size and 1,000 kilometres from north to south. The British government is the government of the UK.

The largest island to the west of Britain is Ireland. The southern - and largest - part  is called the REPUBLIC OF IRELAND, and is an independent country with its capital in Dublin. The northern part is called Northern Ireland and is part of the United Kingdom.
