Taunton, Somerset

The Somerset county town of Taunton.

Taunton is the county town of Somerset and has a population of around 60,000 (2004). The name Taunton originates from the Anglo-Saxon and relates to the name of the river, which flows through Taunton - the River Tone - Tone Town. The town featured heavily in the Bloody Assizes following the Battle of Sedgemoor in 1685, and the infamous Judge Jeffreys held court in the town's castle. Today, Taunton is home to Somerset County Cricket Club, the renowned annual Taunton Flower Show, and the Taunton to Bridgwater canal. The longest preserved steam railway line in England runs from Taunton to Minehead. More about Taunton.
